Two things people miss

Activation isn't automatic. If you don't activate before the quarter's deadline, purchases earn the base 1% until you do (Chase applies the bonus from activation-eligible purchases per their terms — activate early and you don't have to think about it).

The 5% follows merchant codes, not logos. A gas-station convenience store purchase usually counts; a warehouse club's gas pumps often code differently. If you hold a Sapphire card too, those Flex points can be worth more than 5¢ per dollar when pooled — RightCard shows that math honestly.
