Short answer: usually not. Most "6% at supermarkets" style cards won't pay their grocery bonus at Costco — because of how Costco is coded, not what you bought.

The merchant code is what earns, not the shopping cart

Every card purchase carries a merchant category code (MCC) set for the store. Grocery bonuses are written to pay on supermarkets (MCC 5411) — Kroger, Safeway, Publix, Whole Foods. Costco is coded as a warehouse club (MCC 5300). Same groceries in the cart, different code on the wire, so the bonus usually doesn't post. Several issuers even call out warehouse clubs as excluded in their terms.

So what actually earns at Costco?

Your best guaranteed card — the one with the highest flat rate on everything (a 2% card beats a 6% grocery card that pays 1% here).
